Gideon’s big moment By Sophie Cornish INFLUENCES SUCH as Frank Sinatra, The Beatles and Bruno Mars have helped Shirley Boys’ High School’s Gideon Valavala to top of the pops at Smokefreerockquest. The year 13 student was judged best vocal performance at the competition; an accolade he hopes could help springboard a career in music. Gideon’s Shirley BHS band Fuzhun also came up trumps at Rockquest, winning the Pacific Beats category best song award for their original track Champion Sound. Singer/songwriter Gideon, 17, has been passionate about singing since he first began singing at his church, Assemblies of God in Bromley, as a child. “I grew up in church and every chance I had when they would sing songs, I would sing along,” he said. The band was started when music teacher Brad Bates suggested the boys work together to gain music credits for NCEA. “They came up with the idea of bringing together a band and I thought okay I’ll join and have some fun and then people really started to like our sound,” said Mr Bates. When asked about the songwriting process, Gideon said it’s sometimes a group effort but a lot of the lyrics are written by himself. •Turn to page 11 •Band success, page 11
Facebook page set up to prevent crime By Sophie Cornish RESIDENTS HAVE set up a new Facebook page to help solve crime and prevent vandalism and other nuisance-type issues. The New Brighton Crime Watch page was created on September 5 and already has more than 350 members. Some posts on the page include photos and information about stolen vehicles, anti-social behaviour and rubbish dumping. Member Neil Langdon said it was created as a run-off page from the popular People’s Independent Republic of New Brighton page, which has more than 9500 members. Mr Langdon said the page was created to avoid conflict comments between users on the People’s Independent Republic of New Brighton page. Due to the size of the republic group growing so large, moderating and deleting comments can often become a full-time job, he said. “In a group, not everyone thinks the same, not everyone is on the same wavelength, it (the comments) start running away and sometimes people say things they don’t actually mean and it ends up getting nasty.” •Turn to page 4

IN THIS ever-changing world we live in, New Brighton residents are again using social media to help alert people to and potentially solve crime. We report on page 1 today about the New Brighton Crime Watch page – an off-shoot of the People’s Independent Republic page. The new page has been operational for a week and already has 350 or so members. The page will have to be moderated carefully. There are repercussions for posting people’s names on social media if that person has not been convicted of any crime. Innocent until proven guilty still stands. That’s one big boy on page 1 today with a big voice to boot. Shirley Boys’ High’s Gideon Valavala won at the Smokefreerockquest, and his band also did very well in the Pacifica Beats section. – Barry Clarke

Old hand takes new beat in Brighton By Sophie Cornish MEET JIM Currie – the latest sergeant to join the New Brighton Police Station. He has been at the station for five weeks but is no stranger to the eastern suburbs. In 1983, Sergeant Currie began his policing career as a traffic officer for the Ministry of Transport and has noticed big changes, particularly in New Brighton. Empty spaces and vandalism are his main concern. “Once we can secure some of these vacant properties better and deter the tagging, it will improve the aesthetics of the area,” he said. Sergeant Currie grew up in Hoon Hay. He previously led the Public Safety Team in the central city, which answered call-outs for a range of different jobs such as robberies and domestic violence. “Tied to the radio,” is how he describes his work with the Public Safety Team, in comparison to his new role, which is more office-based. In spite of this, he wants to try and get out on the beat as much as he can. “I’m not one to be stuck behind

a desk,” he said. His beat covers the Burwood, Parklands, New Brighton, South New Brighton, Aranui, Dallington and Shirley areas. He leads a team of five community liaison officers who deal with community issues and disputes and follow up on complaints. Police sergeants are routinely moved around every two to
three years and Sergeant Currie is hopeful he will stay the full three years in New Brighton, if possible. “It will give me a chance to get my feet behind the desk and get to know the people in the area,” he said. Sergeant Currie believes he will be able to get a lot done in his time at the station. Outside of work, he enjoys
playing hockey for Canterbury University and the odd game of golf. Playing hockey is a relatively new past-time for Sergeant Currie, who only picked up the sport four years ago after watching his children play. “A friend from work asked me to play in his masters’ team so I gave it a crack and never looked back,” he said.

PUKEKO CENTRE PAVILION The Pukeko Centre is set to open its pavilion in November. The joint venture by the Parklands bowling and rugby football clubs has so far involved the relocation of two buildings from the former Freeville School. Once completed, the multi-purpose facility will accommodate indoor sports, meetings and events. Stage one of four was signed off this month and the joint project committee is looking to host local business owners for an informal information session and tour of the centre’s site. HELP THE GOOD SHOP The Good Shop has just finished its three-month pilot and is crowd-funding to remain open in New Brighton. Located on Carnaby Lane, The Good shop is a social enterprise which was started by Flourish Inc to provide education and workshops about living ethically and the environment. The workshops and activities include yoga, well-being assessments, acupuncture and meditation. Owner Michelle Whitaker is using the Webfair website to raise money to keep the shop running. EMERGENCY EYE SURGERY FOR JESS Meet “Jess” an 8 year old black and white moggy with real attitude, who recently flew down from Nelson to see Dr Steve Heap for emergency surgery on her left eye. Her primary vet at Alabama Vets, had seen her a week earlier for a painful superficial ulcer ( probably from a cat scratch injury). Jess was very hard to examine so was started on topical eye ointment and anti-inflammatory medication. Jess was otherwise well. She returned 2 days later as her owners couldn’t medicate the eye either. By this stage her left eye was producing a bloody infected discharge, had swelled up and the ulcer had grown in size. Her vet added in antibiotic tablets and more medication for inflammation, swelling and pain but the next day the ulcer looked no better. Jess needed to be sedated as the vet couldn’t examine this eye with her awake. Her eye was stained with fluorosein( as can be seen in the attached photo) and had become non healing and so given the difficulty in medicating Jess it was thought a better way to go was surgery in Christchurch with DrSteve Heap. So Jess flew to Steve and was operated on immediately to prevent the eye collapsing and impaired vision. Steve performed a lamellar keratectomy to remove the dead, soft, spongy tissue on edges of the deep stromal corneal ulcer. A conjunctival flap was sutured over the large defect to allow the perfect environment for healing, meaning a good blood supply and protection from environmental allergens. Due to the difficulty in checking the healing progress of Jess’s eye it was thought a good idea to board her at McMaster & Heap vets until Steve was happy that the ulcer was healing. As we were still unable to get near
With fewer people in the Crime Watch group, Mr Langdon hopes this can solve the comments issue as well as helping people to solve crimes and making others aware of them. In spite of this group being created, Mr Langdon, who has lived in New Brighton most of his life, does not believe there has been an increase in crime in the area. Stretched police resources often mean some petty
crimes are overlooked. Mr Langdon said this is just the way it is. “It’s not only the small crimes they have to deal with, it’s a lot of things and unfortunately it’s the small stuff that has to be left behind.” Mr Langdon also doesn’t believe the New Brighton police operate the
same as they have in the past. “It’s (New Brighton Police Station) not being operated the same as it was 20 years ago, but the area isn’t the same as it was 20 years ago. There’s just as many police operating out of the station, but they are not as accessible as they use to be,” he said.
Push for floodplain action By Sophie Cornish THE Coastal-Burwood Community Board is pushing for more action from the city council on its Southshore Floodplain Management Short Term Plan. The city council put forward its proposed shortterm solutions to mitigate flooding and erosion on August 31. They labelled their $1 million solution as the

In its resolution, the community board has recommended this area be restored to pre-earthquake condition, to ensure the safety of nearby businesses and associations as well as continued use of the boardwalk. The community board will offer feedback and recommendations at a meeting on September 28.

Midge plan will take time to work By Sophie Cornish A PLAN has been created to help solve the midge problem affecting Aranui and Bromley residents living near the wastewater treatment plant. The plan was presented at a meeting between residents, city councillors and Coastal-Burwood Community Board members. City council engineer Adam Twose proposed two David East solutions which he believes will be effective in reducing the number of midges. The first part of the plan, set to begin in October, involves methoprene spraying, which will prevent the larvae from developing into adults and breeding. Methoprene is commonly found in flea treatments for animals. It does not impact significantly on bird or water life. This solution has been used in the past. However, further scientific data is needed to accurately determine how much is required to reduce the large numbers. Another part of the plan, which is more long-term, will be the planting of native trees near

Councillor David East is aware of the strain the lengthy process is having on residents. “Again, it’s not offering a huge amount of relief to people right here and now,” he said. Making summer as pleasant as possible for residents is what Cr East hopes to achieve. “I think my objective this year is to see if we can substantially reduce the problem from previous years,” he said. Establishing a monitoring programme will be key to figuring out the extent of the infestation. “If we can get on top of a well organised spray regime, then maybe we will curb the worst of the problem and move towards a solution that’s going to effectively deal with the issue when it arises, before it gets to epidemic proportions,” Cr East said. Both residents spoken to by Pegasus Post feel the number of midges in summer has already reached epidemic proportions.

Installing UV protection was going to come with a price tag of $225 million with an annual upkeep cost of roughly $1.5 million. Mr Twose said the city
council could simply not afford to do this. Residents are still unhappy with the slow action and are facing another summer of midge-related issues. Janet Profit, of Aranui, was disappointed by the time it has taken to find a solution. “Personally, I think it’s been a waste of time, I’ve been fighting this for 10 years,” she said. Aranui resident Heather Porter said the spraying needs to start immediately.

Early godwits By Sarla Donovan THE GODWITS have come early this year. A flock of 348 birds arrived on Thursday at Charlesworth Wetland Reserve, Ferrymead. Many more flocks are likely to land over the coming days, said Andrew Crossland, city council regional parks team. September 7 was “extremely early” for the birds to arrive, he said. Over the past three years, they have arrived on September 19, 14 and 12. And 20-30 years ago, they arrived even later. In 1985, they arrived on September 28, and September 23 in 1990. Mr Crossland said he didn’t know why they were returning earlier, but it could be related to climate change. It takes the little birds about eight days to fly nonstop from the southernmost tip of Alaska, where they go to breed, to New Zealand – about 11,700km. About 90,000 birds make the annual migration.

Your Local Views Celebrating Te Reo Māori Haeata Community Campus director of learning Melanie Taite-Pitama talks about Maori Language Week and the celebration of New Zealand’s indigenous greeting CELEBRATED SINCE 1975, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week acknowledges and celebrates the Māori language as a unique cultural treasure for all New Zealanders. The theme for Māori Language Week, which runs until Sunday, is ‘kia ora te reo Māori’. It was chosen to celebrate New Zealand’s indigenous greeting. Māori Language Commission chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says the theme was not only chosen to celebrate New Zealand’s indigenous greeting, but also because the words ‘kia ora te reo Māori’ mean ‘let the Māori language live’. At Haeata Community Campus, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori happens every week. Haeata provides learning experiences that affirm te reo and tikanga Māori

It is important for everyone to have access to Te Ao Māori in a respectful manner, where together we are able to ensure Māori achieving educational success as Māori. As an official language of Aotearoa, Te Reo Māori is protected, nurtured and shared among our learning communities and whānau to enable our
national language to be naturally embedded and reflected in our people, environment, curriculum and documentation. Haeata has a bilingual provision in both the secondary and primary areas of the kura. Staff are experienced in developing this approach and we have seen a significant positive shift in our ākonga, particularly their ability to use Te Reo Māori naturally at school and home. Ko Haea Te Pūata is the name of our senior kapa haka. They are tutored by Ana Buchanan and are working hard towards performing in the regional kapa haka competitions. We also have other kapa haka across the school who regularly practice and perform in the community. ‘Give it a go whānau’ is our motto at Haeata this week.

SOUTH NEW Brighton Surf Life Saving Club has been nominated for an innovation award for its creation of a health and safety app. The DHL innovation of the year award is a category at the 2017 Surf Life Saving Awards for Excellence, which will take place in Auckland on September 23. Club president Rohan McNaughtan said the idea for the app came about following changes to health and safety legislation. “We became aware that our risk and hazard identification wasn’t really up to scratch,” he said. The app, which can be accessed from any mobile device, is used mainly by coaches before a training session. Details such as the weather conditions, surf conditions, safety hazards, the number of people training and what appropriate clothing they are wearing is recorded. Photos are also taken and saved into the app which provide proof that appropriate safety measures have been taken in case something goes wrong. “If the worst did happen, it shows that we did take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of people training,” Mr Mc-

Injuries and near misses are also a part of the app, another important health and safety factor. “This allows us to look back and say actually there’s a pattern here, maybe we should do something differently. A bit of accountability never goes astray, particularly when you’ve got 100 kids in the water,” Mr McNaughtan said. Creating the app was about finding the easiest way possible to store the information. Previously, pen and paper would be used. However, the beach is not always the best environment for these materials. Funding from the app came from Surf Life Saving New Zealand, which enjoyed the idea but let the South New Brighton club do the production. Other local clubs including Sumner and New Brighton are registered to use the app and there is talk of it being used in Dunedin this summer as well. The 2017 Surf Life Saving New Zealand Awards of Excellence will feature lifesaving, sport and service awards. Some of the top awards include NZ Lottery Grants Board lifeguard of the year, DHL volunteer of the year and the BP surf rescue of the year

Large area of red zone land handed to trust CANTABRIANS ARE a step closer to reconnecting with the residential red zone land thanks to a joint effort between the Government and a local trust, Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration Nicky Wagner says. On Sunday, Ms Wagner handed over 90,000m2 on Brooker Ave, in Burwood, to the Life in Vacant Spaces Trust. “Land Information New Zealand and LiVS have been working together for some time to create a space within the red zone for community projects,” Ms Wagner says. “This area was once home to thousands of people and while about 30 private property owners

remain, the land is largely vacant and underutilised. “This is an opportunity to breathe life back into the area while encouraging the community to think more about how we use it in the longrun. “It also ties in with work by Regenerate Christchurch to develop a regeneration plan for the area.” LiVS, which uses vacant land to create exciting and entrepreneurial transitional projects, has been granted a yearlong licence to use the site. Projects will likely focus on community recreation, health and wellbeing, nature and conservation, and art.
By Sophie Cornish WHAT STARTED out as a project to gain NCEA achievement standards has grown into a success story for Shirley Boys’ High School band Fuzhun. After being together for only three months, the band competed in their first competition in July last year at the Smokefreerockquest regionals in Canterbury, where they took out first place and advanced to the national finals. This year they have achieved even more, winning regionals again and advancing through to nationals in Auckland on September 2. There, lead vocalist Gideon Valavala won the award for best vocalist, pocketing $1000 prize money. The boys also competed at the Smokefree Pacifica Beats nationals which took place on the same weekend, taking out first place in the New Zealand Music Commission best song award for their original track Champion Sound. They received $500 in prize money. Music teacher at Shirley Boys’ Brad Bates said the project began as a way for the boys to gain NCEA credits. “It was a project-based idea where we could get them in a band and if they contribute and write a song together, they could

get competition and group performance credits,” he said. Mr Bates is proud of what the boys have achieved. “The simply formed a band and kept things rolling,” he said. Local musician Jed Parson has been mentoring the group and providing assistance at rehearsals. Band members include Gideon Valavala (guitar and vocals), Tasipale Valavala (drums), Michael Mose (vocals), Loutoa Osai (bass), Temuera Hay (lead guitar), Josh Mosa’ati (vocals) and Keenan Jarvis (vocals). The band’s success has gained them opportunities within the community, including performing in front of 70,000 people at Sparks in the Park in February
of this year. A member of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra arranged one of their songs and performed it with them at the event. In March they also performed at the Linwood Youth Festival, an annual celebration of culture within the community. The band is made up of year 12 and year 13 students. Four members will return to school next year and three will be leaving, however, the band hopes they can still perform together at future events. Mr Bates is optimistic about the depth in Shirley Boys’ music and that they will be able to form with another group and compete at Smokefreerockquest in 2018.

It could be anything from old school music like James Brown, Queen, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra or new school people like Bruno Mars and hip-hop artists like Kendrick Lamar and J.Cole,” he said.

By Sophie Cornish HAEATA Community Campus’ rugby league team made it to the development grade final of the New Zealand secondary schools rugby league tournament in Auckland on Thursday. The team lost to Marcellin College from Auckland 30-8 in the final of the development grade. Sua Aiiloilo, a year 13 student at Haeata, was named MVP for the final. Haeata came up against Trident High School from Whakatane in the semi-final and won 14-10 in a thrilling golden point finish. An error from Trident meant Haeata were able to score a try in the second half of extra time. “The boys went crazy, the sideline went crazy and as soon as the hooter went we ran out there to get our boys,” said coach Te Wairau. The team entered the competiton for the first time under its new school name. Previously, Wairau has attended the tournament with

After losing their first game to Onehunga High School 12-32, the team came back in their next two games of pool play to beat Papakura High School 16-30 and Francis Douglas Memorial College from New Plymouth 20-28. Wairau was proud of the team’s ability to come back after a loss in their first game. “The boys were really resilient,” he said. After attending the tournament previously, Wairau knew it would
be challenging and wasn’t sure how far the Haeata side would get. His goals for the tournament were for the team to work better together. “We needed to build on our camaraderie together.” “We’re one of the smallest teams and one of the youngest teams, but the boys have shown a whole heap of pride in the jersey,” he said. Next year the team will only lose a couple of players who are year 13. Wairau is hoping to build on his young talent and continue in the development grade next season.
Brighton cricket’s new president plans to fundraise for clubrooms By Sophie Cornish NEW PRESIDENT Wade Burrell is gearing up for another season with New Brighton, in spite of still being without its clubrooms. An arson attack in 2015 saw the clubrooms go up in flames. Fiftyeight years of history was lost, and no insurance was paid due to high premiums, meaning the club was left with very little. The possibility of getting a new clubrooms is still at least three years away, according to Burrell, who said it has been an uphill battle with fundraising and city council consents. “There is still a lot of red tape we have to cut through,” he said. Having no insurance has made things “a hell of a lot harder,” he
said. “Ultimately, we would like to get back on the ground with some sort of presence in regards to a building.” Burrell is appealing to businesses who may be interested in making donations to the club. Fundraising is already under way, with $2500 collected from a number of sponsors, including long-time supporter Hellers butchery. With an estimated eight junior teams this season, the club is hoping every player will be able to receive a new playing shirt. Burrell is optimistic sponsors may also come forward to donate much-needed trophies. Being elected president was a
great feeling for Burrell, who is following in his father Derek’s footsteps. He was also club president. Burrell has been a member of the club since age four and plays in the senior A team alongside his 17-year-old nephew, Caleb, making it quite the family affair. The New Brighton Cricket Club committee’s ultimate goal is to have a new clubrooms built at Rawhiti Domain, where parents and children can enjoy a friendly, social space after a day of cricket. BUTTERFLIED LAMB LEG WITH ROSEMARY AND GARLIC Ingredients 1 bunch Flat leaf (Italian) parsley 1 bunch Fresh mint 2 medium Red onions, sliced 1 Butterflied boneless leg of lamb, approx. 150-200g per person 3 cloves Garlic, finely chopped 3 Tbsp Chopped rosemary 2 Tbsp Olive oil 1 cup White wine Directions
ICEBERG LETTUCE, WALNUT AND BLUE CHEESE SALAD Ingredients 1 Iceberg lettuce 1 Walnuts, toasted 1 Blue cheese 1 Walnut oil 1 Cider vinegar Directions Remove the outer leaves of a
small iceberg lettuce. Cut the head into four wedges. Toast some walnuts. Crumble some good blue cheese and, using the white bits from the outer edges. Make a creamy dressing by blending them with walnut oil and a little cider vinegar (olive oil is fine if you don’t have walnut). Sprinkle the walnuts and the blue cheese crumbs over the crisp lettuce wedges and spoon over the dressing.
Preheat oven to 220 deg C. In a roasting tray, lay out the parsley and mint, then add the sliced onions. Place the butterflied lamb leg on top of the onions, fat side up (there should be a thin layer of fat on one side). Score the lamb on the side with the fat in large diagonal shapes. Sprinkle over a large pinch of sea salt, and crack over plenty of black pepper. Rub the garlic into the slits where you’ve scored it, then sprinkle over the rosemary and

Teen makes tracks for model show By Roy Sinclair TEENAGER Celyn Bennet is an unrepentant railway devotee. He best expresses his interest by creating model railway layouts. Owing to space limitations, two of his projects are set up outdoors. Both layouts are based on the popular HO scale or a ratio of 1:87. One of his layouts is ‘Boggy Creek’, which Celyn exhibited at last year’s BIG Model Train Show in Christchurch. It represents a one-time bush tramway associated with a pioneer New Zealand sawmill. He said he “liked the look of” the layout’s integrated sawmill building and rustic steam shovel.
The second layout is ‘Tussock Flats’, a work in progress for this year’s show. It represents a typical 1950s New Zealand country railway station with sidings and a main line. Celyn is involved with the Canterbury Railway Society at Ferrymead and the Mainline Steam Trust at Sockburn. “The catalyst for modelling was from watching James May’s Toy Stories television programme, where he talked about his fascination with well-known model train brands, such as Hornby,” Celyn said. He utilises technology when designing and building rolling stock or line side structures. He will compile items on his
computer and send them as a 3D model to his 3D printer. The printer then builds the solid item in fine layers of plastic. Celyn sources plans from the NZ Model Railway journal and compiles his computer model utilising AutoCAD Fusion 360 software, which is free for students. The Tussock Flats layout will be operated by Hornby elink from his PC or an app on his smart phone. •Meet Celyn and his Tussock Flats layout at the BIG Model Train Show on October 7 and 8 at Pioneer Leisure Centre, 75 Lyttelton St, Somerfield. The theme at this year’s show will be youth and technology

Anxiety and breathing – are they related?

BradCliff was started by North Island physiotherapists Dinah Bradley and Tania Cliffton Smith, who specialise in hyperventilation and anxiety treatment. Their website notes one in 10 people experience some form of breathing pattern
disorder or chronic over breathing at some time in their lives, resulting in a range of disturbing or frightening symptoms puzzling to you and your doctor. You feel unwell because of overbreathing, and overbreathing makes you feel unwell. A vicious cycle is established, which is a major stress all by itself. This is experienced currently by many Cantabrians, says Ietje
van Stolk of Physical Sense Gym & Physio. As she explains, it is normal to breathe fast and in the upper chest when we are in danger and fight or flight is needed. We know all about that here, due to the earthquakes. Normally, once the danger is gone, our breathing should restore itself within a couple of days. We would then be using the diaphragm for our normal nonstressed breathing. We have been having a hard time restoring our breathing pattern here in Canterbury because every time our body tried to achieve that, the next aftershock came rolling in. Even though the aftershocks have significantly diminished, some people’s fight or flight mode breathing has become chronic, or habitual, Ietje says. And, as she points out, using the wrong muscles for breathing means these overworked muscles cause headaches, neck
pain and jaw pain. With fast upper chest breathing, sighing and yawning, the resulting disturbance of our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels can give us the feeling we are not able to control our own body. One moment you are feeling fine, next moment your chest feels tight, you feel out of breath, your heart beats erratically and you may even experience dizziness and/or tingling. Very scary if you do not understand what is happening. No wonder this causes anxiety. Not being the boss over our own body makes us anxious, anxiety feeds the faulty breathing pattern, and so it goes on. I’m proudly standing up for Christchurch East and Backing the Kiwi Dream. This overview of my work and activities in Christchurch East, in my portfolios and in Parliament shows what I’m doing about your concerns and the needs of our community. There’s been a lot of talk about a two-speed recovery in Christchurch. While we are making progress and it’s exciting to see new developments across our city, for many, it can’t come fast enough.
We know that these challenges are not unique to Christchurch East. Families around wider Canterbury and across New Zealand are facing similar struggles and hardship.
It’s shameful that six years on, people are still trying to solve EQC and insurance claims, or have their shoddy ‘repairs’ fixed.
That’s why this election, I’m also asking for your party vote. In a Labour-led government I will be in a stronger position to represent you and the interests of our community, while bringing in policies that benefit our country as a whole.
Christchurch deserves a new vision. We deserve a government that will take a ‘hands on’ approach with our city, and work harder to unlock our potential. On September 23rd consider giving both your candidate and party vote to the Labour Party. With your candidate vote, I can continue working for you. Inside, I share the stories of Cantabrians who have struggled with EQC, health, housing and education. With my hard-working electorate team, we’ve fought to get them better outcomes that will improve their lives.

Alan and Yuki Paynter Alan and Yuki’s Burwood home needed four rounds of repairs. They were just one of 2325 Canterbury homes being reviewed by EQC for their sub-standard repair work. Three years on, the stress and frustration while waiting for EQC’s decision for the best way to repair their home was taking its toll. I fought for the Paynter’s home to be properly reviewed, and for all the damage caused by the earthquakes and sub-standard repairs to be fixed. Alan and Yuki can finally call their house a home again. Labour wants Christchurch to thrive, so our plan focuses on breaking the deadlocks slowing down our regeneration. We will:

Pete Lawrence Work and Income cut Pete Lawrence’s disability benefit without warning. When he contacted WINZ to ask why, Pete was told he hadn’t supplied details and receipts for his annual review, which he also wasn’t notified of. Pete is a tetraplegic and has relied on a wheelchair for mobility for 32 years. He asked for my help to appeal his case, and we fought to have his disability benefit reinstated with back-pay. Labour believes New Zealand can be a place where everyone lives well, and with dignity. We will: • •
Bring in new policies and staff training at Work and Income to change the culture, and make sure people can access what they are entitled to. Increase the Accommodation Supplement, Working for Families payments, and implement a Families package, meaning more money for low and middle income families.
• Raise the abatement threshold for beneficiaries, making it easier to transition into employment.
Cyril Edwards
Health
The ongoing pain in his knee was making it harder for Cyril to drive trucks and earn a living. No matter how hard he tried, Cyril couldn’t even see a specialist to be referred for an operation. The pain was so bad, he was considering quitting his job and going on a benefit for a few years until he was able to collect superannuation. I made sure Cyril’s knee was examined by a specialist. Now he’s recovering well, and happy to be returning to work again. Labour will invest an additional $8 billion in health over four years. Better access to early treatment will keep people healthier and reduce the burden on our health system. We will: •
Repair the relationship with the Canterbury District Health Board, so services are properly resourced to reach the people who need them.
• Cut GP fees by $10 per visit, with $8 GP visits for Community Services Card holders. •
Fund free mental health care in the community, including an extra eighty mental health professionals across Christchurch schools.
Sarah*
Housing
In the middle of a custody battle with her ex-partner, Sarah needed to show adequate housing to keep and protect her children. Having left her partner, she was now living with her mother who also cared for a number of children, including one severely autistic child. Sadly, this meant nine children and two adults sharing a four bedroom house. Sarah struggled to get on the waiting list, but with our support, we got her on the list and assessed as a high priority. She is now in her own home with her three children. Labour believes housing is a right, and we want all New Zealanders to have a fair shot at living in a warm, dry home. We will: •
Build more state houses, end the state house sell-off, and turn Housing New Zealand back into a public service.

Establish an Affordable Housing Authority to cut through red tape and get more homes built fast.
•
Crack down on property speculators and create a level playing field for first home buyers.

Miniene Kata Miniene’s son is a great student. He does well on the rugby field, in the classroom and has a bright future ahead of him. When Miniene’s husband passed away, she struggled to meet ends meet while making sure her son received a good education. Miniene came to me for help, and together we found a solution to pay for her son’s education so he could stay in school. Labour will invest in improving the quality of our education system, making it more accessible and affordable. We will: •
Invest an extra $4 billion over four years to deliver a modern education system.

Ensure that schooling is genuinely free by offering an extra $150 per student to state and state integrated schools that don’t ask parents for donations.

Introduce 3 years of free post-school education, allowing access to university, polytechnic or on-job training for young New Zealanders
Supporting Christchurch Labour has a vision for Christchurch. Our city is rebuilding, but for many it feels like a two-speed rebuild. Labour will begin implementing our plan for Canterbury immediately, showing our commitment to get our region moving, and thriving. We will: •
Commit an additional $100 million to public transport, including commuter rail from Rolleston to the CBD.

Restore full democracy to Environment Canterbury.
•
Partner with the City Council and stakeholders to deliver government funding to the New Brighton Masterplan and Regeneration Project.
•
Establish a $300 million capital fund to develop the red zone, contribute towards a new stadium, and deal with the gaps in our local infrastructure.

We respond to a wide range of issues from our New Brighton Electorate Office. In the last six months, we answered 414 queries, most of them regarding Justice of the Peace services which are relatively straightforward.
During the last six months in parliament I have helped hold the government to account by asking 136 Written Questions and making 19 Official Information Act Requests.
More people are asking for help with earthquake issues compared to the last six months. The government should have stepped in a long time ago to stop EQC and insurance companies holding up people’s recovery. Labour’s arbitration tribunal policy will break deadlocks and get our rebuild back on track.
In parliament I made 44 speeches during many debates and bill discussions, including on the Care and Support Workers (Pay Equity) Bill, which gave a pay rise to 55,000 care and support workers in the aged and disability sectors.
Labour has solutions for the people asking for help with hardship, housing, WINZ and the Ministry of Social Development. Our Winter Energy Payment will give an extra boost for seniors and beneficiaries struggling to heat their home. We’ll also require all houses to be warm, dry and healthy, and will give grants to landlords and homeowners to achieve that. The culture at WINZ must change. Too many people have had their disability or unemployment benefit cut without notice, and I’ve had to advocate for people to simply get what they are entitled to. Labour will modernise our welfare system so it aligns with the job market and is fair and accessible for all. To help those coming to me with accommodation issues, Labour will make Housing New Zealand a public service again. It’s one job will be providing quality housing for people in need, and not paying a dividend to the government. Labour will end plans to sell off state homes, and through our KiwiBuild programme and Affordable Housing Authority, we’ll build more houses. This will create a level playing field for first home buyers and reduce the Housing New Zealand waiting list. No New Zealander should be homeless. We’re a better country than that.
I held 14 forums for community organisations across the country, and have created policy based on what they need. Under a Labour-led government, community and voluntary organisations can engage in advocacy without the fear of losing their funding or charitable status. When the Minister for Disability Issues tried cutting funding to IDEA services or said she would rather be on the harbour than in meetings with disability groups, I challenged her and held her accountable. Working with the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, I helped secure $50,000 to fund Shakti Women’s Refuge. This vital organisation empowers women and children of all cultures, while protecting victims of domestic abuse. Labour recognises the importance of New Brighton to the wider eastern rebuild. While this government cut funding, a Labour-led government will back the New Brighton Regeneration Project. I remain committed to serving the communities of Christchurch East, and working with my Labour Party colleagues to improve conditions for people across New Zealand. Giving both your candidate and your party vote to Labour will let me continue serving you for the next four years.
